Family Promise of Albuquerque- A Local Affiliate
Family Promise of Albuquerque is a local affiliate of a national organization. Nationally, Family Promise has been providing shelter for families experiencing homelessness for over 25 years and has 182 affiliates. Family Promise of Albuquerque has been here for 11 years and has provided shelter for over 400 families. Family Promise of Albuquerque has about a 70 percent success rate of helping families find housing within 90 days of entering our shelter program -- Interfaith Hospitality Network.
Family Promise of Albuquerque can provide shelter for up to four families at a time in the Interfaith Hospitality Network. We provide the shelter by partnering with 19 congregations around Albuquerque. These congregations of different faiths convert classrooms into bedrooms for one week at a time. All four families stay at the same congregation and move to a new congregation every Sunday. Family Promise of Albuquerque provides beds that volunteers move every week. Volunteers at the congregations provide guests with nurturing and a sense of community. They provide homemade meals and sit down with the guests for family-style dinners. They help children with homework and also tutor parents when needed. They provide activities in the evenings and on weekends and they stay overnight to ensure safety. In the mornings, they drop all of the children at school and bring parents who do not have jobs to the day center where the parents spend every weekday morning with tutors, attending skill-building classes and applying for jobs. Case management also is provided to help families connect with resources.
Family Promise- A National Organization
The first Interfaith Hospitality Network (IHN) was established in New Jersey in 1986 by Karen Olson and her community of Union County. To date, Family Promise has established 182 affiliates using the service of over 160,000 volunteers and 6,000 congregations.
The IHNs provide shelter, meals, and housing and job placement support to more than 49,000 homeless family members annually -- 60 percent of them children.
Witnessing firsthand the obstacles that low-income families face, Family Promise leaders and volunteers have been motivated to do more. Affiliates have seized the initiative to create additional community programs, such as housing renovation, job training, and healthcare programs.
As a way of helping at-risk families avoid homelessness, Family Promise began training volunteers to advise and mentor families in order to help the families achieve and maintain self-sufficiency.
To foster a greater understanding of the root causes of homelessness, Family Promise launched the Just Neighbors educational curriculum.
In 2003, the organization changed its name to Family Promise to reflect a broader range of programs and reaffirm its core commitment to helping families realize their own potential. The shelter portion of the program is still referred to as Interfaith Hospitality Network. Although 41 states and 160,000 volunteers now define the breadth and depth of the organization, Karen's mandate remains in place -- if you can strengthen one family, you can strengthen a nation.
